A MAN, A CAN, A PLAN

During the Napoleonic Wars, Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, concerned about keeping his armies strong, offered a cash prize to whoever could develop a reliable method of feeding his troops.
The  prize was 12,000 francs to any inventor who could devise a cheap and effective method of preserving large amounts of food. A French confectioner and brewer, Nicolas Appert, developed a method of sealing food in glass jars.

An Englishman, Peter Durand, took the process one step further and developed a method of sealing food into unbreakable tin containers.
