Illinois Strength

Posted by Mike Gittleson on Mar 16, 2015 9:24:00 PM

Aaron Hillman, the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at the University of Illinois has a vast experience in strength and conditioning, he has coached at Ball State, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Notre Dame, Bowling Green, Michigan and has had stints with the NFL. Aaron has numerous power racks in his facility, but understands the value of tools. Football is an aggressive sport and to participate at the highest level having a wide variety of exercise devices allows a coach to augment his athletes training.

Not only does having a wide range of equipment allow an athlete to reach his potential, but there are always periods whereby a coach has to address the health of each individual. Athletes may need to reduce the load on the spine, thay may need to change training modalities to accommodate for casts on an appendage or may be undergoing rehabilitation for an injury. Having head and neck machines is important, as well in all programs to keep athletes safe and Get them Strong

Training The Entire Hamstring

Posted by Mike Gittleson on Nov 13, 2014 8:46:00 PM

The hamstring muscles cross the hip, as well as the knees. Muscles such as these are biarticular, that is, they cross two joints rather than one. Training a hip dominant exercise such as the stiff legged deadlift or an RDL regionally targets a specific portion of the hamstrings. The stiff legged deadlift and the RDL bring the greatest focus and electrical activity on the upper area of the hamstring specifically the upper medial portion. The lying leg curl targets the lower medial portion. By choosing appropriate exercises that specifically develop the upper and the lower sections of biarticular muscles leads to greater muscular adaptation.

West Rusk High School

In the early 1900's gender-specific colors brought about a great diversity of public opinion At the time it became generally accepted that pink was for boys and blue more fitting for the girls.  Pink was considered a watered down red and a strong color and blue more delicate, danity and prettier for girls.  The pink and blue gender rules one hundred years later, have sinced reversed and pink has lost its symbolism of being a strong color.

Not so fast - at West Rusk High School in Texas pink is not only a strong color,  training on the pink machines and power racks will in fact Get you Stronger.

Hamstring Training

Posted by Mike Gittleson on Sep 1, 2013 1:49:00 PM

Recently in the Journal of Electromyography and Kinesiology a group of scientists looked at electromyographical activity of the knee flexors in previously strained hamstrings of recreational athletes that had returned to normal activity.  They compared their results against their contralateral leg, as well as looked at comparisons of a population of athletes that had never been injured.  The research group found the knee flexors on athletes with a history of a previously injured limb were weaker at all contraction speeds tested.

Many recreational athletes return to activity with very little supervised rehabilitation and the results could be expected.  Even though the athlete may feel great and function at their normal level they may never return to normalcy again.  Based on the aforementioned information it is clear all injured need strength training.

As a coach it is important to periodically test your athletes hamstring strength, this is not just for the athlete that has been previously injured.  Ankle sprains, thigh bruises, hip injuries can all lead to disuse in a limb.  Our bodies have miraculous ways to compensate. An athlete may perform well but have a strength deficit.  Assume nothing.

The absolute best tool for testing and/or strength training the hamstring is the Pendulum leg curl Get and keep Strong.
